Senior Software Engineer (Robot DevOps)

Onsite San Jose, CA Senior Full-time $200,000 – $250,000

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own how robots get provisioned, updated, and managed in the field. You will build the provisioning pipeline, the over-the-air update system, and the edge device management tooling that bring a robot from crate to production.

This tooling sets how many robots one deployment engineer can support, which constrains how fast AMP reaches new sites.

You will work with the platform, core robotics, and field teams, who depend on this tooling during customer deployments.

What you’ll do

  • Build and own the robot provisioning pipeline: identity issuance, certificate enrollment, initial configuration, and first-boot validation.
  • Design and operate the over-the-air update system for on-robot software, including staged rollout, health gating, and rollback.
  • Build edge device management tooling covering inventory, configuration drift detection, remote diagnostics, and log retrieval.
  • Define and enforce the release path to running robots across heterogeneous hardware.
  • Instrument fleet-wide update health so failures surface before a customer reports them.
  • Build the tooling field engineers use to bring up, re-image, and recover robots on site.
  • Harden device credential handling, secret rotation, and secure boot practices across supported platforms.
  • Support deployment escalations by tracing failures across the provisioning, update, and configuration path.

Job requirements

Experience

  • 5 to 8 or more years of professional infrastructure, DevOps, or systems engineering experience, with at least 2 years managing software on physical devices or embedded targets.
  • Experience running an over-the-air or remote update system in production, including handling partial failures and rollback.
  • Experience supporting fielded hardware where a bad update has a physical cost.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • Equivalent industry experience with demonstrated ownership of device fleet infrastructure may be considered.

Core technical background

  • Strong Linux systems background, including systemd, networking, storage layout, and kernel or driver level debugging.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and container runtimes on constrained or edge hardware.
  • Experience with device provisioning and identity: PKI, certificate lifecycle, mutual TLS, hardware roots of trust.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and configuration management.
  • Proficiency in Python and Go, Rust, or C++.
  • Working knowledge of ROS 2 packaging and deployment practices.

Systems mindset

  • Ability to reason about failure modes when the device is remote, intermittently connected, and expensive to touch.
  • Comfortable designing for partial connectivity, clock skew, and mid-update power loss.
  • Builds tooling that removes manual steps.

Collaboration

  • Clear communicator who can work effectively with remote teams across multiple time zones.
  • Willing to support field engineers directly during deployment windows.

Nice to have

  • Experience with VDA 5050 or other robot interoperability protocols.
  • Experience with Azure IoT, AWS IoT Greengrass, or a comparable device management service.
  • Experience with A/B partition schemes, OSTree, Mender, or RAUC.
  • Familiarity with industrial network topologies and PLC integration.
  • Prior open-source contributions to the ROS ecosystem.
