Senior Software Engineer (Test)

Onsite San Jose, CA Senior Full-time $200,000 – $250,000

We are seeking Senior Software Engineers to build regression coverage for the AMP orchestration and execution engine ahead of 1.0 GA. You will report to the Staff Software Engineer, who leads the Test team and owns the test automation infrastructure you will work in.

Coverage spans cloud services, an on-robot runtime, and physical hardware, which means simulation and hardware-in-the-loop alongside conventional test infrastructure.

What you’ll do

  • Build and own automated regression coverage for the AMP execution engine, orchestration services, and workflow authoring paths.
  • Design test scenarios that exercise multi-robot, multi-step workflows including failure, preemption, and recovery paths.
  • Build simulation-based test environments and integrate them into the release pipeline.
  • Build hardware-in-the-loop coverage for on-robot behavior that simulation cannot validate.
  • Define release qualification criteria with the Staff Software Engineer (Test) and enforce them as gates.
  • Track and drive down test flakiness so failing builds mean something.
  • Reproduce and characterize field escalations as permanent regression tests.
  • Report coverage and quality honestly, including where the suite is blind.

Job requirements

Experience

  • 4 to 8 or more years of professional software engineering or test engineering experience, with at least 2 years testing distributed systems or robotics software.
  • Experience building automated test infrastructure, not only writing test cases.
  • Experience testing systems with physical actuation or hardware dependencies.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • Equivalent industry experience building test infrastructure for complex systems may be considered.

Core technical background

  • Strong Python, plus C++ or Rust for testing at the component level.
  • Experience with test frameworks, fixtures, and harness design for long-running, stateful scenarios.
  • Hands-on experience with ROS or ROS 2 integration testing.
  • Experience with robotics simulation platforms such as Gazebo or Isaac Sim.
  • Experience integrating test suites into CI and reasoning about runtime and cost.
  • Working knowledge of fault injection, timing, and concurrency testing.

Systems mindset

  • Ability to identify which failure modes matter and design tests that catch them.
  • Comfortable reasoning about nondeterminism, timing, and state consistency in distributed systems.
  • Measures what the suite does not cover and reports it.

Collaboration

  • Able to work effectively with remote teams across multiple time zones.
  • Comfortable pushing back on releases when the evidence does not support shipping.

Nice to have

  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop rigs and test bench design.
  • Experience testing AMR navigation, SLAM, or manipulation behavior.
  • Experience with property-based or model-based testing.
  • Familiarity with test requirements for safety-related or regulated software.
  • Prior open-source contributions to robotics test tooling.
