Staff Software Engineer (Test)

Onsite San Jose, CA Staff Full-time $270,000 – $350,000

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the Test team and own both halves of the job: test strategy and coverage, and the test automation infrastructure underneath it. There is no test organization today. You will define the quality bar, build the infrastructure that measures it, and hire the engineers who extend it.

Coverage spans cloud services, an on-robot runtime, and physical hardware on separate release cadences.

You will report into engineering leadership, work across platform, core robotics, and infrastructure, and hold authority over release decisions.

What you’ll do

  • Own the test architecture and strategy for AMP across the platform.
  • Define release qualification criteria and enforce them as gates, including the decision to hold a release.
  • Own the test automation infrastructure: harnesses, fixtures, runners, simulation environments, and hardware-in-the-loop rigs.
  • Design the coverage model across unit, integration, system, and field levels, and state where each is blind.
  • Lead the Test team, starting with two Senior Software Engineers.
  • Work with the Build and DevOps Engineer to integrate qualification into the release pipeline.
  • Set testing practices across engineering teams that do not report to you.
  • Establish the path from field escalation to permanent regression coverage.
  • Report quality honestly to product and executive stakeholders, including when the evidence does not support shipping.

Job requirements

Experience

  • 8 to 12 or more years of professional software engineering experience, with 4 or more years owning test architecture or quality engineering for a shipping product.
  • Demonstrated ownership of release qualification for a system with hardware dependencies, not only hosted services.
  • Experience building a test function or team from an early state.
  • Experience testing distributed systems and robotics software.

Education

  • Master’s degree or higher in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field. This is a minimum requirement.

Core technical background

  • Strong Python and C++, with the depth to review and debug production code across the stack.
  • Experience with Rust is a strong preference.
  • Experience designing test harnesses for long-running, stateful, concurrent scenarios.
  • Hands-on experience with ROS or ROS 2 integration testing.
  • Experience with robotics simulation platforms such as Gazebo or Isaac Sim, and a clear view of their limits.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop infrastructure and test bench design.
  • Experience with fault injection, timing, and concurrency testing.
  • Working knowledge of test requirements for safety-related software.

Systems mindset

  • Ability to identify which failure modes matter and build the coverage that catches them.
  • Treats flakiness as a defect in the test system.
  • Measures and reports what the suite does not cover.

Technical leadership and collaboration

  • Operates as the quality authority across engineering and earns that standing technically.
  • Able to hold a release decision under commercial pressure and explain the basis for it.
  • Clear communicator who can work effectively with remote teams across multiple time zones.

Nice to have

  • Experience testing AMR navigation, SLAM, or manipulation behavior.
  • Experience with property-based or model-based testing.
  • Experience with test evidence for certification or regulated software.
  • Experience with performance and load testing for cloud platforms.
  • Prior open-source contributions to robotics test tooling.
